Garden Route / George

Along the south coast of South Africa is a highway which to those who know it is called the Garden Route. Although the Garden Route is also a nature reserve on the other side of the small town of George, most people refer to it as the road trip between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

We tackled this Garden Route over four days, four nights, stopping along the way at many exciting places.

On our first day, we drove between Cape Town and Mossel Bay. That’s 385km, 4 hours of driving. It was a long day but we stopped off at two exciting places on the way.

The first was Hermanus, which is a profound whale watching coastal town. Here we had a tea and sat with our binoculars overlooking the bay to see some whales. I’m quite glad to say that we saw a few! That’s another animal seen in its natural habitat.

The next place we saw was L’Agulhas National Park which is home to the Southernmost Point of the African continent, also the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans! For a maps geek like me, this was pretty cool!

The next day was mostly spent at Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, where I treated my parents to a spa treatment and a game drive. I had a full body bamboo massage which was delightful and on our game drive we saw a baby rhino! Worth every penny.

Most of the next day, we spent at the mall recollecting ourselves and shopping for essentials. But the day after we headed to Monkeyland and on our one-hour tour, we saw loads of awesome little monkeys and small apes. An unforgettable experience for sure and we all loved being amongst those amazing creatures.

We then went to an Elephant Park in Knysna, where we were very honoured to feed some huge elephants lots of different fruit and vegetables. Then we were privileged enough to walk amongst these great animals, Mum and Joe had a short elephant ride. I think the photos speak for themselves.
